The trend of handing out straight-to-series orders this pilot season is continuing. ABC has handed a 13 episode straight-to-series order to a new drama project which hails from David O. Russell, Susanna Grant and CBS Television Studios.
According to Deadline, this new (and as-yet untitled) drama is an upstairs/downstairs soap set in a private country club. The project is being co-written by David O. Russell and Susannah Grant, who will also executive produce alongside Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman. Timberman/Beverly, CBS Television Studios and ABC Studios are producing the drama, which is eyed for a slot on the nets Fall 2014 schedule.
With the pick up, this is the latest project for the 2014-2015 to bypass the traditional pilot model and score a straight-to-series order. It comes at a time when there has benn, thanks to comments made by Fox topper Kevin Reilly at the TCA Winter Press Tour, some debate over the efficacy of the broadcast pilot model. Other drama projects that have landed straight to series orders for next season include Hieroglyph and the Commissioner Gordon Project at Fox, and Battle Creek at CBS, while Fox also handed a series order to Backstrom, which was piloted at CBS last season.
