Four ABC Family series are coming to the UK courtesy of iTunes.
I’ve learned that, following a content deal with Disney, iTunes is exclusively offering ABC Family series Baby Daddy, Bunheads, Melissa & Joey and Jane By Design to UK customers, with the complete series of Bunheads and Jane By Design, the first season of Baby Daddy and the first two seasons of Melissa & Joey – the first season of which was previously available in the UK via Netflix UK & Ireland – currently available for purchase. Season passes can be purchased for £17.99 (Standard Definition) or £19.99 (High Definition). Individual episodes are also available for purchase at £1.89 (Standard Definition) or £2.49 (High Definition).
This move from Disney to pact with Apple to premiere these series exclusively on iTunes in the UK comes after the distributor has had a hard time shopping its ABC Family series to UK broadcasters – either traditional or streaming (such as LOVEFiLM and Netflix). Disney had previously sold ABC Family series’ The Secret Life of The American Teenager and Pretty Little Liars to MTV, but, following poor ratings, the broadcaster dropped both. The only other ABC Family series of recent memory to land a UK sale was Melissa & Joey, which went to Netflix in 2012, but since then there has been little sign that the streaming giant intends to continue the series – something which is now certain given iTunes’ exclusive window on season two.
