Comedy Central UK has closed a deal with NBCUniversal International Television Distribution to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to the eighth and ninth seasons of NBC’s comedy series The Office. The show’s eighth season is set to premiere on the channel on Wednesday October 16th at 10:30pm, as part of Comedy Central UK’s new comedy block which also features The Millers and Two And A Half Men.
The Office is based on the series created by Ricky Gervais and follows the day-to-day lives of the employees of the Scranton branch of the Dunder Mifflin paper company. The series is produced by Deedle-Dee Productions and Shine America in association with Universal Television and stars James Spader, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Ed Helms, B.J. Novak, Leslie David Baker, Phyllis Smith, Angela Kinsey, Brian Baumgartner, Oscar Nunez, Kate Flannery, Paul Lieberstein, Mindy Kaling, Creed Bratton, Craig Robinson, Ellie Kemper and Zach Woods.
The pick up of the show’s final two seasons marks a reversal of Comedy Central’s prior stated plans not to acquire seasons eight and nine of The Office from NBCUniversal. It was back in July when TVWise broke the news that the broadcaster had dropped 30 Rock that we also reported that representatives of Comedy Central UK had informed us that they would not be continuing with the series.
“The Office is a staple in Comedy Central UK’s schedule with a consistently solid viewer-base,” said Brad Wood, Head of Acquisitions for Comedy Central UK. “We’re delighted to have picked up the remaining two seasons so we can deliver more of what our viewers love to watch.”
