LOVEFiLM Acquires UK Rights To BBC America’s ‘Copper’

The Amazon owned streaming service LOVEFiLM has closed a deal with Cineflix Media to acquire the exclusive UK broadcast rights to BBC America’s hit drama series Copper. Every episode of the show’s first season will be made available to stream for members of the OTT service on Friday September 13th.

Created by Tom Fontana and Will Rokos, Copper is set in New York in the 1860′s and revolves around Kevin Corcoran, a tough yet decent police detective, who returns from war to find his wife missing and his daughter dead. On a hunt for the truth, Corcoran divides his time between working cases for the City and trying to piece together what happened to his family. The drama series stars Tom Weston-Jones, Kyle Schmid, Anastasia Griffith and Franka Potente. Copper is produced by Cineflix Studios in association with BBC America, Beta Film and Shaw Media.

This is the latest first run deal inked by LOVEFiLM in recent months and follows on from a similar deals for History’s Vikings, which bypassed a traditional broadcaster and was made available to UK audiences via the Amazon owned and operated streaming service. The deal also comes after LOVEFiLM had indicated an intention to go after more first run series for the UK market – in part so it could better compete against Netflix – and after execs from the streaming service attended the LA Screenings for the very first time this past May.

“Breaking records for a broadcaster like BBC America is a testament to the quality of this show and we’re thrilled to bring it to the UK”, said Simon Morris, LOVEFiLM’s Chief Marketing Officer. “We’re always looking to bring great new TV content to British viewers, and following the success of “VIKINGS” it’s exciting to see the faith content creators have in our platform as a way to launch new shows in this country.”

While Chris Bonney, CEO of Rights for Cineflix Media, added: “Copper” has been a great success for Cineflix in North America and we’re sure it will be equally loved by British audiences. As we look to increase our broadcast partners and revenue from the growing trend for online viewing, we’re delighted to partner with LOVEFiLM, which is the perfect way for fans to dive into the gritty world of post Civil War New York.”
