Helen McCrory (Harry Potter), Danny Sapani (The Bill) & Simon Russell Beale (Spooks) have joined the cast of the Showtime/Sky Atlantic co-production Penny Dreadful, TVWise has learned.
They join previously announced main cast members Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, Billie Piper, Rory Kinnear, Reeve Carney and Harry Treadaway. McCrory has been cast as Madame Kali, a spiritualist; Sapani as Sembene, an African warrior and longtime ally of Sir Malcolm (Dalton); and Russell Beale as Ferdinand Lyle, an eccentric Egyptologist.
Created by John Logan, Penny Dreadful will see some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters – including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula – become embroiled in Victorian London. The series weaves together these classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation. The series is produced by Neal Street Productions with John Logan and Sam Mendes serving as executive producers. Juan Antonio Bayona is on board to direct the opening block of episodes.
