BET International has announced that they have picked up the UK rights to BET’s upcoming original series Being Mary Jane and the TV movie/backdoor pilot for the series which originally aired state-side back in July 2013. The TV movie/backdoor pilot will debut in the UK on BET International on Sunday September 22nd at 10pm, while the series proper will follow in February 2014.
Created by Mara Brock Akil, Being Mary Jane follows the complex life of Mary Jane Paul, a fiercely independent and successfully modern woman encountering the highs and lows of balancing life, love, family and a demanding career. Mary Jane Paul seemingly has it all; a beautiful home, a sexy sports car, intelligence, drive and a successful career as TV news presenter. In reality, she has a lacklustre love life and remains devoted to a family that doesn’t share her motivation. The question is, how far is she willing to go to find the pieces of the puzzle that she – and society – insist are missing from her life? The drama series is produced by Breakdown Productions and stars Gabrielle Union, Richard Roundtree, Lisa Vidal and Omari Hardwick.
Being Mary Jane (formerly known as Single Black Female) proved to be a hit for BET in the United States when it premiered in July, attracting over 4 million viewers and becoming the #1 weeknight primetime TV movie in Adults 18-49 for all of 2013. Following that success, the network recently renewed the series for a second season before its first has even premiered. The series had long been expected to air in the UK on BET International, which mirrors almost the entire line up of the American parent channel.
