At the Edinburgh TV Festival today, BBC One Controller Charlotte Moore announced the commission of a 90 minute adaptation of the Road Dahl novel Esio Trot, which will star Dame Judi Dench and Dustin Hoffman; and Ordinary Lies, a new six episode drama series which hails from Danny Brocklehurst and Red Production Company.
Based on the Road Dahl novel of the same name & adapted by Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer, Esio Trot tells the story of Mr Hoppy (Dustin Hoffman), a retired bachelor, who harbours a secret passion for his neighbour, the lovely Mrs Silver (Judi Dench). Unfortunately she lavishes all her affection on another… Alfie, her pet tortoise. Mr Hoppy yearns to talk to Mrs Silver, but tongue-tied and shy, his attempts always end in disaster. Mrs Silver’s greatest wish is for her tortoise Alfie to grow a little bigger. All seems lost for Mr Hoppy until he has the brightest, most devious of ideas. Will Mr Hoppy’s wildly ingenious plot win the love of his lady? Endor Productions is producing the 90 minute film. The executive producers is Hilary Bevan Jones. Dearbhla Walsh is attached to direct.
Created by Danny Brocklehurst, Ordinary Lies is set in a car showroom and focuses on a group of compelling characters all dealing with every day dilemmas and what happens when the lies people tell to keep their heads above water spin out of control with sometimes tragic, sometimes funny consequences. Red Production Company is producing the series, which has received an order for six episodes, with Nicola Shindler serving as the executive producer.
