UKTV has closed a deal with CBS Studios International to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to TNT drama series King & Maxwell for its Alibi channel. The acquisition of the series, which has yet to be renewed for a second season, has been expected for some time, with TVWise reporting in June that UKTV execs were eying the series for a slot on Alibi. The first season of King & Maxwell is expected to premiere on Alibi in early 2014.
Based on David Baldacci’s King & Maxwell novel series, the drama series follows former US Secret Service agents turner Private Investigators Sean King and Michelle Maxwell who use their unique skill set (not to mention their razor-sharp chemistry) to gives themselves a leg up on both suspects and conventional law enforcement. With her striking beauty, athletic prowess and Beltway connections, Maxwell is a formidable investigator, determined to prove herself after being forced to resign from the Secret Service. King, a recovering alcoholic with a passion for romance novels, lost his job with the Secret Service when the presidential candidate he was assigned to protect was assassinated. Now, his background as a lawyer gives him a keen insight into the legal ins and outs necessary to do his job better than just about anyone. The drama series is produced by CBS Television Studios and stars Jon Tenney, Rebecca Romijn, Ryan Hurst, Michael O’Keefe and Chris Butler.
“Alibi’s loyal viewers love fast-paced, deductive narratives and the smart rapport between the lead characters will immediately appeal to them”, said Steve Hornsey, General Manager of Alibi. “The channel has proven success with best-selling book-based adaptations and we’re delighted to add David Baldacci’s King & Maxwell to the content mix.
Catherine Mackin, UKTV’s Director of Programme Acquisitions, who brokered the deal, commented: “I am delighted to be continuing our successful partnership with CBS. King & Maxwell will complement Alibi’s existing crime drama slate including Castle and Rizzoli & Isles and it is another example of UKTV premiering hit US content to our viewers first, ahead of other UK broadcasters.”
While Stephen Tague, Senior Vice President of Europe for CBS Studios International, added: “We’re thrilled to continue the successful partnership between CBS Studios International and UKTV. King & Maxwell has undoubtedly found its proper home amongst Alibi viewers, delivering them mysterious, funny and character-driven story lines.”
