With the recent pick up of Mark Burnett’s The Bible follow up AD: Beyond The Bible, there was little doubt that NBC was recommitting to longform. So it came as no real surprise when NBC topper Bob Greenblatt announced at the Television Critics Association 2013 Summer Press Tour that the network had put four longform projects into development (three mini-series and one limited series).
Those projects include a behind-the-scenes look at Hillary Rodham Clinton, an updated retelling of Rosemary’s Baby, an adaptation of Stephen King’s Tommyknockers and Plymouth, based on the story of the Mayflower’s landing in America.
Hillary is a four hour mini-series based on the life of former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The skein is bbeing written and directed by Courtney Hunt. The miniseries will recount Clinton’s life as a wife, mother, politician and cabinet member from 1998 to the present. The script will begin with Clinton living in the White House as her husband is serving the second of his two terms as president. In the years following, she would eventually become a United States senator, run for president and, ultimately, serve the country as secretary of state. Golden Globe nominee Diane Lane is attached to star as Clinton. Endgame Entertainment are producing with Sherryl Clark and James D Stern serving as executive producers.
An updated retelling of the novel and feature film, Rosemary’s Baby is a four hour mini which tells the story of devil worship and a complex relationship between a young husband and wife. In the new version, the couple lives in Paris where this edge-of-your-seat thriller unfolds. This updated is being penned by Scott Abbott. Lionsgate TV is producing with Joshua Maurer, David Stern, Perri Kipperman and Alix Witlin serving as executive producers.
Based on the 1987 novel of the same name, Stephen King’s Tommyknockers explores how the residents of a small Maine town deal with what they believe is an alien spacecraft that has landed nearby. Yves Simoneau is attached to direct. The executive producers are Frank Konigsberg and Larry Sanitsky.
Plymouth is a limited series which is being written by former Law & Order: Criminal Intent showrunner Walon Green and examines the challenges and drama of the Pilgrims’ journey across the Atlantic and the difficulties of settling in a new country. Mark Burnett Productions is producing with Mark Burnett, Anne Thomopolous, Gina Matthews and Grant Sharbo serving as executive producers.
