John Hurt (Merlin) has joined cast of FX’s upcoming drama pilot The Strain as a series regular. Hurt has been cast as Professor Abraham Setrakian, a holocaust survivor who immigrated to the United States after World War II and now runs a pawn shop in Spanish Harlem. As the outbreak spreads, he may be the only one with answers – if anyone will listen. He joins previously announced cast members Corey Stoll, Kevin Durand, Mia Maestro, Richard Sammel, Lauren Lee Smith, Jonathan Hyde and Miguel Gomez.

Based on Chuck Hogan’s best-selling vampire novel trilogy, The Strain follows Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself. The pilot was penned by Hogan and Guillermo del Toro, who is also directing. FX Productions is producing with Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and Gary Ungar serving as executive producers.

“I am incredibly happy to be reunited with John, who is one of the greatest actors in the world and one of my favorite people ever,” said Director and Executive Producer Guillermo del Toro. “Chuck and I always visualized him while writing The Strain novels and he is absolutely perfect for the part!”
