Created by Sue Perkins, Heading Out follows Sara (Perkins), a veterinarian so skilled, she can spay a tortoise one-handed. She’s successful, she’s popular, there’s just one chink in her armour: she’s too scared to tell her parents she’s gay. On the evening of her 40th birthday, Sara’s friends give her an ultimatum: either she tells her parents when they come to visit in six weeks’ time, or they will. To help Sara achieve this goal, they’ve saved up to buy a series of sessions with Toria, the eccentric and mildly-qualified lifestyle coach/ therapist, and so the countdown begins. The comedy series is a co-production between Red Production Company and Square Peg TV and stars Sue Perkins, Mel Giedroyc, Dawn French (French and Saunders), Shelly Conn (Marchlands), Joanna Scanlan (The Thick Of It), Nicola Walker (Spooks), Mark Heap (Friday Night Dinner), Dominic Coleman (Trollied), Raquel Cassidy (Lead Balloon), Harriet Walter (Law & Order: UK), Steve Pemberton (Benidorm), Jeff Rawle (Doc Martin), June Brown (EastEnders) and Anna Skellern (Parade’s End).
In tonight’s episode, Toria, determined to get Sara fully prepped for her parents visit, takes her, Justine and Jamie to her parents stately home in the country to give Sara a trial run at coming out. Welcomed with open arms by Toria’s eccentric family – her mother Frances (Dawn French), father Humphrey (Geoff McGivern) and elderly grandmother Sozzie (June Brown) – Sara and her friends learn that the spooky, historical house is the family business, which Toria is set to inherit. With the company quizzing her on her love life though, it isn’t long before Sara cracks and successfully admits to everyone that she’s gay. Thankfully, Toria’s family are thrilled by her proclamation, but wrongly assume that she and Toria are an item, which to Sara’s surprise, Toria happily goes along with.
