The acquisition is part of larger deal signed by parent company Fox International Channels (FIC), who have secured the exclusive first window pay-TV rights for the life of the series outside of the US, Canada & France. The deal is similar to those FIC has previously inked for The Walking Dead, Dexter and Starz’s Da Vinci’s Demons. The deal that Fox International Channels (FIC) has struck with Endemol will see the show’s ten episode first season air on FOX in the UK and FIC’s 200 pay-TV entertainment channels to audiences in 120 countries across EMEA later this year.
Based on the British series of the same name, Low Winter Sun tells the story of a Detroit detective who murders a fellow cop. Seemingly the perfect crime, in reality the murder activates forces that will forever alter that detective’s life and pull him into the heart of the Detroit underworld. The ten-episode series is a co-production between AMC Studios and Endemol Studios and stars Mark Strong and Lennie James. Criminal Minds‘ Chris Mundy wrote the pilot and is serving as executive producer/showrunner.
Speaking of the global deal to pick up Low Winter Sun, Sharon Tal Yguado, the Executive Vice-President of Scripted Programming and original development at Fox International Channels, said: “We are huge fans of the British miniseries and with Mark Strong reprising his role it was hard to say no. We have a long relationship with Endemol and we’re thrilled to be working with them on this exciting project.”
Cathy Payne, the chief executive at Endemol Worldwide Distribution, commented: “Low Winter Sun is a major release for Endemol and we are thrilled that FIC are on board to take this exceptional series to a worldwide audience.”
While Jason Simms, Fox International Channel’s Senior Vice-President of global acquisitions, added: “2013 is shaping up to be a banner year for FIC’s continued push into global series. We’re certain that Low Winter Sun will shine brightly among our sensational line up of must-see global shows. ”
