The Revolution will be televised….in the UK. Sky1 has closed a deal with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to NBC’s drama series Revolution. This deal, which follows on from one inked with Sony Pictures Television in recent weeks to acquire Last Resort, is for the first three seasons of the show and had been hinted at for some time, with TVWise reporting in October that chatter coming out of MIPCOM was that the series would be coming to a UK broadcaster, and that BSkyB was considered the frontrunner. My sources tell me that Revolution will begin airing on Sky1 in early 2013.
Created by JJ Abrams and Eric Kripke, Revolution is set in a world where, some 15 years earlier, technology ceased to exist and the world was suddenly thrust back into the dark ages. Now, life is back to what it once was long before the industrial revolution: families living in quiet cul-de-sacs, and when the sun goes down lanterns and candles are lit. Life is slower and sweeter. Or is it? On the fringes of small farming communities, danger lurks. And a young woman’s life is dramatically changed when a local militia arrives and kills her father, who mysteriously – and unbeknownst to her – had something to do with the blackout. This brutal encounter sets her and two unlikely companions off on a daring coming-of-age journey to find answers about the past in the hopes of reclaiming the future. The drama series is produced by Bad Robot Productions & Warner Bros. Television and stars Billy Burke, Tracy Spiridakos, Zak Orth, Graham Rogers, JD Pardo, Giancarlo Esposito, David Lyons, Maria Howell, Daniella Alonso, Tim Guinee and Elizabeth Mitchell.
Speaking of the acquisition of Revolution, Sarah Wright, Controller of Acquisitions for Sky Entertainment, said: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Warner Bros. on this latest project from J.J. Abrams. Our customers have always had a strong connection with J.J. Abrams event series and we’re confident that Revolution will prove to be a monster hit with them following its record breaking debut in the US.”
While Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, President of Warner Bros. International Television Distribution, added: “Revolution is an amazing ratings success in the United States, so not surprisingly there has been enormous interest in bringing the series to U.K. audiences. This is a big-budget, compelling and exciting series perfectly matched for Sky1 HD and we are sure it will be a hit for them.”
