EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that executives at BSkyB’s Sky Living are closing in on a renewal for their dramedy series Mount Pleasant. My sources tell me that it is not a done deal yet, but they fully expect that the series will be back for a third season. I hear that the episode order for season 3 has not been finalised and will be “somewhere between six and ten episodes.” From everything I hear, the order may land somewhere in the middle with 7 or 8 episodes.
Created by Sarah Hooper, Mount Pleasant follows the daily lives of Lisa, her husband, her family and her friends. The series stars Sally Lindsay as Lisa, Daniel Ryan as Dan, Pauline Collins as Sue, Bobby Ball as Barry, Angela Griffin as Shelley, Sian Reeves as Bianca, Liza Tarbuck as Kate, Owen McDonnell as Jack, Ainsley Howard as Denise, Robson Green as Chris and George Sampson as Gary, Bianca’s step son. The show originally began its life on Sky1 before jumping to Sky Living earlier this year for season 2. I hear that across season 2 the show performed well with one source describing it as “one of our bigger hits” when talking of Sky Living’s original scripted fare.
The expected re-commission of Mount Pleasant is part of BSkyB’s stated desire to be spending £600 million a year in British programmes across its portfolio of channels by 2014. The broadcaster is also expected to re-commission two of its other originals in the coming months. I hear that both Bedlam and Gates will be back in 2013 for new runs. Executives at Sky Living are still considering a third season renewal for Bedlam – which is a co-production with BBC America – while a re-commission for comedy series Gates is also on the cards. Gates has recently spawned a US adaptation, which recently got a pilot order at NBC and my sources tell me that Gates and Mount Pleasant will be key to “our [Sky Living’s] growth in 2013.”
