UKTV’s Alibi channel has closed a multi-season deal with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to future seasons of TNT’s crime drama series Rizzoli & Isles. The third season of the series is set to receive its UK premiere on Alibi in January.
Created by Tess Gerritsen and developed for television by Janet Tamaro, Rizzoli & Isles revolves around Jane Rizzoli, a tough-as-nails Boston police detective, and Maura Isles, a smart, impeccably dressed medical examiner from a privileged background. Despite being complete opposites, the two women share an offbeat chemistry and strong working relationship that lets them solve complex murder mysteries in the city of Boston. The drama series is produced by Warner Horizon Television and stars Angie Harmon, Sasha Alexander, Lorraine Bracco, Bruce McGill, Lee Thompson Young, Jordan Bridges and Brian Goodman.
The deal with Warer Bros. represents Alibi’s long term committment to Rizzoli & Isles, which has been a big hit for the broadcaster. The show’s second season averaged 495 000 viewers, up a staggering 482% on the slot average and up 26% on the season 1 average. All of which helped parent company UKTV cement its position as the fastest growing TV network for the first six months of 2012.
Speaking of the deal with Warner Bros. for future seasons of Rizzoli & Isles, Steve Hornsey, General Manager of Alibi, said: “The first two seasons of Rizzoli & Isles have proved a massive hit with our audience and so we are thrilled to have secured the series for UK viewers. This deal proves we are dedicated to showcasing the most thrilling and engaging crime drama available, which we know our viewers will enjoy.”
UKTV’s Head of Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Alexandra Finlay, who brokered the deal, commented: “Rizzoli and Isles has been a big success both Stateside and in the UK, so this strategic deal with Warner Bros further strengthens Alibi, helping to ensure it remains a must-have channel for all fans of crime drama.”
While Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, President of Warner Bros. International Television Distribution, added: “We are pleased that Rizzoli and Isles will continue to have a home in the UK on Alibi, where it has consistently been a strong performer.”
