BBC One has given the green-light to Our Girl, a one-off 90 minute drama written by Tony Grounds. The military drama is a coming of age story which follows lead character Molly Dawes from civilian to soldier serving in Afghanistan. Lacey Turner (Bedlam) has been cast in the lead role as Molly, with production on the drama slated to commence later this month on location in Hertfordshire.
Produced by BBC Drama Production, Our Girl tells the story of Molly Dawes (Turner), the eldest of five kids with little future, a difficult father and a mother who always wanted more for her. Born and raised in the London Borough of Newham,she leaves school with no qualifications and finds a part-time job in a local nail bar. Drunk and despondent on the evening of her 18th birthday, she throws up in the doorway of an Army Recruitment Office. She doesn’t know it then, but it’s an action that will change her life forever as she goes from nobody to a soldier in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and the onto her final arrival in Afghanistan. The 90 minute one-off is executive produced by John Yorke, with Ken Horn Ken serving as producer and David Drury on board as director.
Speaking of her role in Our Girl, Lacey Turner said: “I am so excited to be a part of Our Girl. It is a beautifully written drama of one girl’s journey through life. Molly is such an interesting character who shows such strength and determination. She’s a girl who you cannot help but love.”
