HBO’s The Newsroom kicked off it’s freshman run last night with 2.1 million total viewers in it’s initial airing at 10pm. That number rises to 2.7 million when factoring in the second telecast of the show’s premiere episode.
Those ratings are more or less even with the premiere of HBO’s Game of Thrones which drew 2.2 million total viewers in 2010, but are down compared to the series premiere of Boardwalk Empire which drew 4.8 million viewers in 2010. It should also be noted that Sunday night’s ratings for The Newsroom were considerably up compared to the series premiere of HBO’s most-recent drama series Luck, which drew in 1.1 million total viewers in live+same day. The strong premiere for The Newsroom makes a second season renewal a foregone conclusion.
