Showtime has renewed their period drama series The Borgias for a third season of ten episodes, it has been announced. Production is slated to commence on the show’s third season this summer in Budapest and Hungary.
The Emmy award winning series was created by Neil Jordan and follows Pope Alexander VI, the cunning, manipulative patriarch of the infamous Italian Renaissance family who builds an empire by bribing, buying and muscling his way into the papacy. The series cast includes Jeremy Irons, Colm Feore, François Arnaud, David Oakes, Holliday Grainger, Joanne Whalley, Lotte Verbeek, Sean Harris and Aidan Alexander.
The Borgias is one of three original series currently airing on Showtime (the other two being The Big C and Nurse Jackie) and is the highest rated series out of the three. The third season renewal brings the series producers closer to their stated desire that the series run for four seasons. It is currently unknown if Showtime will renew The Big C or Nurse Jackie.
