TNT has renewed its critically acclaimed police drama series Southland for a fifth season of 10 episodes, it has been announced.

Back in March, TVWise broke the news that TNT was zeroing in on a fifth season renewal with the only sticking point being the number of episodes that would be ordered. TNT was pushing for a standard 10 episode order, while series producer Warner Bros. Television was looking for a higher order in the 13-15 episode range.

Southland was created by Ann Biderman and follows the day-to-day lives of a group of police officers working for the Los Angeles Police Department. The series stars Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, Benjamin McKenzie and Regina King, with Lucy Liu joining the cast in the fourth season in a recurring role. Over the course of its fourth season, the drama series averaged more than 2.9 million viewers in Live + 7, growing its performance in adults 18-49 demo by 3%. The show also made gains of 2% in 25-54 demographic compared to last season

Speaking of the renewal, Michael Wright, President and Head of Programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM), said: “I’m proud today to announce that TNT has ordered 10 episodes for a fifth season of Southland, scheduled to begin in February 2013. Season after season, critics and fans alike have championed TNT’s Southland as one of television’s best dramas. This year, the show has not only solidified its impassioned fan base, but also picked up some new young-adult devotees along the way.”

TVWise’s Cable TV Scorecard has been updated with this new information.
