Syfy Announces Scripted Development Slate Including Projects From Robert Hewitt Wolfe & Stephen King

Syfy has revealed details of their scripted development slate, which includes a project from Robert Hewitt Wolfe (Andromeda) and an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Eyes of the Dragon.

Headlining things on the scripted side is Defiance, Syfy’s upcoming TV series which was developed alongside the MMO game of the same name (Read TVWise’s exclusive on Defiance here). Defiance is set in the near future and introduces a completely transformed planet Earth, inhabited by the survivors of a universal war. Forced to co-habitate, the disparate group struggles to build a new society among the devastation. The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe where their respective narratives will inform one another and evolve together into one overall story.

The network also has one pilot titled Rewind, which is currently in production in Toronto, Canada. Rewind revolves around a team of military field operatives and civilian scientists who must use untested technology to travel back in time to alter events and change the future and avoid a devastating terrorist attack. Shane McRae stars as Sean Knox, ex-Special Forces who ranks as a field operative in a special division of the Department of Homeland Security. The pilot also stars Jennifer Ferrin, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Robbie Jones and Keon Mohajeri.

Exclusive: Damages Season 4 To Receive Its UK Premiere On DVD

Exclusive: I have just learned that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is preparing to release the fourth season of legal drama series Damages on DVD in the UK.

Multiple sources have confirmed that the release is happening and that the three disc set will hit stores on Monday July 16th. I’m also being told that artwork for the set hasn’t been finalised yet, so the image on the right may not be the same as the front cover for the box set by time of release.

Sources also tell me that the box-set will include nine deleted scenes, a gag reel and two featurettes (“The Evolution of Patty Hewes” and “A Case For War: The Cast and Crew Discusses The Fourth Season). Sony are expected to formally announce the title within the next month.

In the fourth season of Damages, Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) prepares for a class action suit against a multinational pharmaceutical company, Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) returns to Hewes & Associates to pursue her own lawsuit against military contractor High Star Security and its powerful CEO, Howard Erickson (recurring guest star John Goodman).

This will be the first time that the show’s 10 episode fourth season will have been available to fans of the series in the UK. The first three seasons of Damages were previously broadcast by BBC One in the UK, however TVWise recently confirmed that the broadcaster has no plans to air the show’s fourth or fifth seasons. This comes after Sony took a similar approach with Breaking Bad, by releasing the show’s third season straight to DVD after the series was dropped by its UK broadcaster due to disappointing ratings.

ITV Orders New Drama Series ‘The Bletchley Circle’

ITV has ordered a new murder-mystery drama series titled The Bletchley Circle, from writer Guy Burt. The broadcaster has ordered three episodes for the show’s first season, with production due to commence in London at the end of April.

Produced by World Productions, the drama series is set in 1951 and follows Susan, Millie, Lucy and Jean, all of whom worked at Bletchley Park during the war and have now returned to civillian life. At Susan’s insistence, the four women get back together and use the skills they acquired during the war to crack a murder case which has the police stymied. Andy De Emmony is attached to direct, Jake Lushington will produce and Simon Heat will serve as the executive producer.

The Bletchley Circle stars Anna Maxwell Martin as Susan, a seemingly conservative and unadventurous 1950′s housewife and mother; Rachael Stirling as Millie, who can speak fourteen languages and has a streetwise approach to life; Sophie Rundle as Lucy, whose youthful, naïve exterior masks a brilliant memory for data recall and Jean, the methodical no-nonsense organiser with valuable access to key records and documents.

The drama series was ordered by ITV’s drama comissioning team, Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes. Speaking of the series, Laura Mackie said: “The Bletchley Circle combines a vivid portrait of post-war Britain with a taut and original thriller I’m delighted that we’ve attracted such a strong cast to bring it to life.”

While Jake Lushington commented: “The Bletchley Circle is about what might have been. Despite the era they have come through, women like Susan and Millie have the capacity, the ideas and the ability to process evidence and crack a murder case.  In many ways it is a form of police profiling which was way ahead of it’s time.”
