Exclusive: I’ve just learned that Channel 5 has closed a deal with NBCUniversal International Television Distribution to acquire the UK broadcast rights to the second season of Alphas for its 5* channel.
Details of this are coming in a little late, but sources familiar with the deal tell me that it includes a clause preventing 5* from broadcasting the show’s second season until August, thereby guaranteeing that US broadcaster Syfy will have the global premiere for the show’s second season.
Alphas stars David Strathairn, Ryan Cartwright, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Laura Mennell and Malik Yoba and follows a group of humans with superhuman abilities, known as Alphas, who work for Dr Lee Rosen at the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) where they track down other Alphas who may pose a threat to themselves and others.
The long gestating science fiction series is produced by Universal Cable Productions and was created by Zak Penn and Michael Karnow. Created in 2006 under the name Section 8, the series originally landed at ABC with a six episode order in 2007, before the 2007 – 2008 WGA strike derailed the project. After two years of re-writes and trying to sell the project to other networks, Syfy came into the picture, ordering a pilot and later an 11 episode first season.
The show’s second season is expected to premiere on Syfy in the United States in July.
