ITV has ordered Mr Selfridge, a new drama series from writer Andrew Davies. The series is based on the book Shopping, Seduction and Mr Selfridge by author Lindy Woodhead which is the biographical account of the life of Harry Gordon Selfridge and the story of his store.
ITV has ordered 10 episodes for the show’s first season. Casting is currently underway in the United States for the lead role. The series is being produced by ITV Studios, with Chrissy Skins and Kate Lewis serving as executive producers. Writers on the series include Andrew Davies, Kate Brooke and Katie O’Riordan, with Jon Jones set to direct. Filming of the series is expected to begin in April with ITV eyeing a 2013 premiere for the series.
Mr Selfridge is set in London in 1909 and has been described as telling “the story of ‘Mile a Minute Harry’, a man with a mission to make shopping as thrilling as sex. Pioneering and reckless, with an almost manic energy, he created a theatre of retail where any topic or trend that was new, exciting, entertaining – or sometimes just eccentric – was showcased.”
Speaking of the series, Peter Fincham, ITV’s Director of Television, said: “The story of Harry Selfridge and how he transformed the world of retail is fantastically rich territory. Andrew Davies and the team have created a compelling and entertaining series that is part family saga and part workplace drama.”
